tim in iowa here. You might be interested in a book titled "Blue Highways" by William Least Heat Moon. The term "blue highways" refers to the color of the highway on a map. The back roads the roads less traveled are blue. In the late 70's or early 80's WLHM took a trip similar to your upcoming sojourn. Big difference, however, his was a trip was bourne out of failure and dispair, yours is not.
